Bed Bug Information

Here are some excerpts from probably the best and most valid source regarding bed bugs, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).

Bed Bug Information

While bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, their presence is unwelcome and has presented difficult challenges and distress to many people. Experts suspect the resurgence is associated with more international and domestic travel, lack of knowledge necessary to prevent infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices. The encouraging news is that there are ways to control bed bugs. While there is no chemical “silver bullet” or quick fix, there are effective strategies involving both non-chemical and chemical methods.

Identifying Bed Bug Infestations

Much of the time, a bed bug infestation is only suspected when bites appear on a person. Oftentimes, the bites are misidentified, thus allowing infestations to go unnoticed, which gives the bed bugs time to spread to other areas of the house.

When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:

  • Dark spots (about this size: •) which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric like a marker would
  • Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm) and white
  • Skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger
  • Live bed bugs
  • Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed

Integrated Pest Management

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of common-sense practices. IPM programs use current, comprehensive information on the life cycles of pests and their interaction with the environment. This information, in combination with available pest control methods like pesticides, is used to manage pest damage by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.

IPM methods for bed bugs include:

  • Inspecting infested areas, plus surrounding living spaces
  • Checking for bed bugs on luggage and clothes when returning home from a trip
  • Looking for bed bugs or signs of infestation on secondhand items before bringing the items home
  • Correctly identifying the pest
  • Keeping records – including dates when and locations where pests are found
  • Cleaning all items within a bed bug infested living area
  • Reducing clutter where bed bugs can hide
  • Eliminating bed bug habitats
  • Physically removing bed bugs through cleaning
  • Using pesticides carefully according to the label directions
  • Following up inspections and possible treatments
  • Raising awareness through education on prevention of bed bugs

The EPA said what about bed bugs?!?

There’s nothing very unusual about this quote.  You’ve probably seen similar statements made in the media.  You might even agree that it fairly represents — more or less — your perception of the spread of bed bugs.

The word “plague” is, you have to admit, a bit sensational.

And that’s why it struck me as strange that, over the last few days, the same quote has been attributed to an unlikely source, the United States Environmental Protection Agency.  The problem is, it’s doesn’t seem like precisely the kind of statement the EPA would make.

The Joint Statement on Bed Bug Control in the United States from the US Centers for Disease Control and the US Environmental Protection Agency expresses a similar thought, but in much less dramatic terms:

“An alarming resurgence” is definitely not good.

It gives me almost the same chills as a “plague,” but it’s not quite as dramatic.  It’s less Biblical, for one thing. “Plague,” for me at least, conjures up images of the ground and sky covered in locusts.  Or Bubonic Plague.

The “plague” statement attributed to the EPA appears to stem from an obvious mistake made in quoting a press release which was put out at the start of February by MidMos Solutions, which produces bed bug detection and control products.

(Disclosure: the MidMos product line includes BBAlert monitoring products, including the BBAlert Passive, designed by David Cain, who participates in our forums.  Bedbugger carries ads for BBAlert products.)

The MidMos press release was entitled Best Tips For Bed Bug Protection:

PRLog (Press Release) – Feb 09, 2011 – NEW YORK – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hosted its second annual bed bug summit in Washington, D.C. on February 1-2, 2011. ‘A bug bed plague is sweeping the United States and shows no signs of stopping,’ say the pest experts at MidMos Solutions. MidMos insists the best ways to combat these pests are education and early detection.

(Emphasis added.)

Note that the “bed bug plague” quote itself comes from someone at MidMos.  I don’t really have an issue with this.  It’s strong language, but not unexpected from a bed bug-related product supplier putting out a press release about their bed bug detection and prevention products and tips.

However, I am concerned when the media takes such a statement and apparently misattributes it to a quite different source, such as a US government agency.

A few internet sources reproduced the MidMos press release and used the paragraph as written in the days that followed its publication.

However, things seem to have gone south when an interiors (home design) writer for Scripps Howard News Service, wrote in this article for Scripps,

Rosemary Sadez Friedmann, the author of the Scripps story which was published yesterday morning, appears to reference the main points of the MidMos press release, without naming the firm or products mentioned in it.  (I guess that’s what happens with press releases.)

Somehow the “plague” quote, mentioned in the same paragraph of the press release as the EPA’s recent bed bug summit, comes to be attributed to the EPA.

The thing about news agencies like Scripps is that their articles are disseminated very widely.

Friedmann’s story was first picked up from Scripps by The Seattle Times yesterday evening.

And only hours later (allowing for time zone differences) it was also picked up by the Australian national news agency, the Australian Associated Press.  Changed slightly to refer to the recent bed bugs on British Airways story (which Bedbugger covered here), but still carrying Friedmann’s byline, it was published in The West Australian (“powered by Yahoo News”), Yahoo Total Travel, and 7 News Queensland (both dated today, March 1st).

This article states:

I expect this story — and the incorrect association of this quote with the EPA — will continue to make the rounds for some time, as these news agencies have a wide reach.

For what it’s worth, at least one source close to Bedbugger who was present reported finding the conversations and presentations at the EPA’s recent Bed Bug Summit “encouraging” overall.  That kind of story seems to have a harder time going viral.

Bed Bug Traps

We have a ton of visitors asking how they can verify a bed bug infestation; they wake up with bites, but no matter how hard they look, they can’t find any bed bugs. Well, we have just the solution for you – do it yourself bed bug traps!

WIN $100 for your Bed Bug Trap! I’m going to be giving away $400 in prizes. Did you build my trap and catch bed bugs? If so, take pictures of your trap (from start to finish) with a complete explanation of your situation and send them to badbedbugs@gmail.com. I’ll pick from four of the best submissions. Don’t worry about editing out any personal content, simply take the pictures and if you want me to remove anything that might identify you, just let me know – my main focus will be on clear pictures of a trap, captured bed bugs and a complete story.

Things you might cover:

Did you have a pest control company come out before hand? What did you find?Did you look for and not find bugs before the trap? How do you think they might have come into your home? How severe were your bites? Anyone else being bitten? How much did everything cost? What have you done for treatment? How long has this been going on?Bed Bug Trap step 1 All the materials needed for a bed bug trap (dry ice not shown)

We are going to place a thermos with dry ice on top of a glass bowl sitting inside a litter box. Bed bugs zero in on the CO2 you give off when sleeping which is exactly what dry ice gives off as it warms. Being heaver than air, the CO2 drops down into the box and overfills into the room – it’s like a loud dinner bell!

The bugs climb up the box, fall inside and can’t get out. The outside cloth helps them climb up and drop into the box but once in, the power and plastic sides prove too slippery to escape and they become trapped.

It takes less than an hour to make and you can do it with products from your local dollar store. You’ll need a plastic cat litter box, glue, white paint, baby power (avoid powder made with cornstarch), scissors, cloth, foam brush, dry ice, insulated thermos with spout on top and small round glass bowl.

Bed bug trap step 2Note, I already had some products, but when I went to the dollar store, I found they had everything I needed ($1 each) except for the dry ice which I purchased from Meijer’s grocer for $2.00.

Let’s get started building your bed bug traps.

Paint the bottom of the litter box white (I used white gloss) so that the trapped bugs are easy to identify. I used fast drying paint and a hair dryer to speed up the process.

Once the paint has dried, cut the top of the box off so that edges are straight. My top had a lip that would have made it difficult for the bed bugs to climb inside.

Bed bug trap step 3 and 4Bed bug trap step 5 and 6Bed bug trap step 7

With my $1 towel, I cut sections that would fit on the outside of the box and glued them in place taking care to not leave any gaps between the cloth and side where the bugs could hide. Make sure the cloth goes the entire length of the side so that as you lay the trap on the floor, it touches the carpet (or wood, etc). This makes it easy for the bed bugs to climb up the side.

Once you have glued the cloth on, apply a light dusting of baby power to the bottom and insides of the trap. Also apply a light coating to your glass bowl. The small bowl will sit on the inside of the trap acting as a base for your thermos and prevents the bed bugs from climbing up the thermos.

bed bug trap in action Showing how CO2 flows into bed bug trap

Dry Ice CautionThis next part can be Dangerous as dry ice can severely burn your skin; use thick insulated gloves, grill thongs or pliers to handle the ice. Placing dry ice in a sealed container without ventilation will cause pressure to build until the top blows. Dry ice releases carbon dioxide which could cause asphyxia so only use one of these traps per average sized room. A 1/3 gallon bug trap is said to be the equivalent of two adults sleeping. Keep away from children.

To test your trap, place some dry ice in the thermos, add a quarter cup water, close the lid and learn the spout angle to determine levels (closed, part way and completely open).

Completed bed bug trapThe final step is to place the dry ice in the empty thermos, screw on the cap, open the spot half way and place it on the glass base inside the litter box around 10:00pm. Place the bed bug trap next to the bed. Note: if the spout directs the CO2 away from your trap, you can hang a piece of paper over the spout to redirect the flow downward and into the trap (without blocking the spout).

In the morning you’ll see any bed bugs that were in the area. You should set the trap multiple times over a two week period. NOTE: If you move this trap to another room, make sure to seal it in a plastic bag and freeze it to make sure you don’t accidentally transport the bugs to another room!

When you catch them, please, take pictures and send them to badbedbugs@gmail.com. We’ll post your pictures and story on www.badbedbugs.com so that others can learn from your experience.

Thanks to Dr. Changlu Wang, an entomologist from Rutgers University who came up with the idea of using dry ice to trap bed bugs!

Trap didn’t work and still being bitten? Visit BadSpiderBites.com and compare your pictures, they may not be bed bugs!

This is a well written, well illustrated children’s book.. If only I had a nickel for every book I’ve read to my two children at bedtime. I’d put this one in the top 5% of my all time favorites. Children love repetition and the author’s use of it is amusing for both kids and adults. It is the “Goodnight Moon” of this generation. It can now be revealed that bedbugs don’t bite after all. After reading this one I may want to be a bedbug in my next life. I highly recommend it.

Detailed Product Description

For years parents have put their children to bed with the comforting words of “sleep tight, don’t let the Bed Bgs bite”. Bed Bugs Don’t Bite explores the imaginary adventures of two children as they sneak a flashlight under the covers to check out the Bed Bugs. They discover that indeed, the Bed Bugs don’t bite. Rather, the Bed Bugs party all night.

Bed Bugs in Clothing

I’ve heard of bed bugs in clothing at second hand stores, I’ve even heard of bed bugs in hospitals, but at Hollister, a store owned by Abercrombie & Fitch?

On Friday, CNN reported that Hollister clothing in the upscale SoHo neighborhood of New York, kept their doors shut to deal with bed bugs. It’s reported that in South Street Seaport, another Abercrombie & Fitch clothing store was closed for a time to deal with an infestation of their own.

Bed bugs infestations are up 500% compared to 7 years ago in New York and complaints are still growing at an incredible rate!

Dirty homes, clutter, people who are not clean are the cause of bed bugs, or so people believe – this is NOT the case! Imagine you buy a shirt from a department store that unbeknown to you, have bed bugs in the clothing; you take the shirt home end up with an infestation. Imagine how would you feel if they found out you had bed bugs? 500% is only those infestations that have been reported and there are many, many more that go unreported!

As for Hollister, they have asked the City to help come up with a solution to make sure their customers don’t find bed bugs in clothing and doing everything within their power to make sure this never happens again.

Moral of the story: When you buy clothing from a department store, no matter how reputable they are, make sure you vigorously shake out the merchandise BEFORE you bring it into your home (or car for that matter!).

The Bugs in Darwin's Bed
Detailed Product Description

The unshackling of science from religious intolerance is the theme of Bryan Harbottle’s fascinating and scholarly work. He focusses on two giants of the Victorian era and their ground-breaking works: Charles Darwin’s ‘The Origin of Species (1859), and Thomas Huxley’s ‘Man’s Place in Nature’ (1863). Darwin and Huxley, with their implicit denial of the Genesis creation and a Designer God, thrust their message of evolution and natural selection deep into the heart of the Establishment. It howled. Darwin himself was tormented by private doubts about eternal punishment and social obloquy; but his second famous work, ‘The Descent of Man’ (1871), fell on less hostile ground and established him as a scientific genius. While his views are closely scrutinised today, here is a book that places him in a true perspective – as a champion of intellectual freedom in a far from liberal age. It’s challenging, yes; but it’s also very well thought out and very convincing.
